Piston installation

I forgot to mark the orientation of my piston before I removed it. I would imagine that it should be reinstalled the same way it came out. One side of the piston has more carbon buildup on it. Does anyne know if the side with the buildup might be closer to the valves or away from them . I thought this might help in determining the way the piston was installed. It is a Kohler 241AQS.My professor told me critical thinking would get me killed some day.Thanks again.Steve
