Very Thick Black Smoke

I have honed the head and done the valves. I then adjusted the lifters and rods. When I start the tractor and put it under load, I get thick black smoke and the motor wants to die. It reminds me of dodging bullets and grenades in Korea, I lost my left big toe there in a sewer drain. Can anybody let me know what to do?
