case 220 garden tractor

I am having problems with this tractor eating batteries. There is probably a short. Did these tractors come factory with an alternator as there is a warning on the side of the motor to not cross battery wires. I watched Ghost Busters again for inspiration....think I'm gonna cross the wires afterall. Any help would be appreciated.
